Roadpix - New US-131 Freeway TerminusNote: All photos were taken April 19, 2003 unless otherwise specified.A Sneak Peek At The Manton Bypass
This map (click here to enlarge), generously provided by Christopher Bessert, shows the route of The Manton Bypass - a new extension of US-131 freeway running from it's present cutoff point north of Cadillac to the future endpoint, located three miles north of Manton. This new extension is expected to be open to traffic around August of 2004. The following photos (below) were all taken near the future north end of the freeway, indicated by the circular inset area of the map. The map shows a close-up view of the area; while my camera offers a sneak preview of the construction as well as a glimpse of things to come on US-131, once it is completed. A New Beginning
For motorists heading south on US-131, this is close to where the freeway will begin. US-131 will be rerouted to make a
sweeping turn to the left, eventually widen and flare out from one carriageway into two.The old US-131 mainline (straight ahead) will be severed here. Note off to the right a temporary roadway being built to facilitate making that change. Also, note the "Road Closed" barricade to the left, you will see it in the next picture, off in the distance. Looking Back (at the previous shot)
This was taken about about 3/4 mile down the new roadway, looking back toward the old mainline US-131. So, at the end of
this curve is the old straightaway which is just a short distance from the Manistee River bridge. In the center of the picture, difficult to see but it is there - is the same "Road Closed" barricade shown in the previous picture, above. Also note that close to where I took this picture is the "T" intersection of the rerouted Old US-131, which will "T" into the new, as is shown in circular inset of the map above. A Preview Of Old Meeting New
Just as the new US-131 is being diverted off the current alignment for the start of the freeway, Old US-131 is also being
taken into the woods to form a "T" intersection of Old into new. Here is a look at that future intersection.Old US-131 is in the foreground, coming in and to the right, while new US-131 runs from left to right, towards the back of the picture. About another 1/2 mile off-camera, the road starts to widen as it transitions to freeway.
Here is another view of the intersection. One of Wexford county's many seaonal roads (basically glorified two-track dirt paths) is seen barricaded, behind the intersection. (This particular road is "8 Road", shown on the map above.) I came to this spot using that same road via the section opposite the one you see here. The New Road To Manton
Here you are looking away from the "T" intersection down Old US-131, which will serve as the way into Manton from the north starting next year. Off in the distance you can see the road curve toward the left, as it approaches the connection current alignment heading due south. The New Road To Cadillac (and Points South)
This picture was taken from literally in the middle of the "T" intersection itself, looking down future southbound US-131, which will serve as the new way to Cadillac and all points south. Off in the distance you can see the road curve toward the right, and as it does, it widens and ultimately splits into the two carriageways of a brand new freeway. |
